Fruit of the Spirit – Gentleness
Did you know that gentleness is not weakness, but it is rather a fruit of the spirit that demonstrates strength of character?Yes, I know that in our world, many would believe that being gentle means being passive or powerless. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, gentleness is a powerful tool that can have a tremendous impact on those around us, and it is an essential characteristic of the believer in Christ. It is important to develop this noble character of strength and tenderness, which will enable us to represent Christ to the world as we invite others to taste and see His meekness.
Gentleness is particularly important because it is a quality that helps us to interact with others in a way that is pleasing to God. “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” – Colossians 3:12. God has commanded each of us to be gentle towards each other. As we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives, each of us can develop this fruit of the spirit so that our lives can be pleasing to God.
Now, let us consider why it is so important to bear this fruit.
Jesus is the perfect example of gentleness. Matthew 11:29 says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Jesus modelled gentleness in his interactions with others, even with those who opposed him. He did not retaliate or seek revenge but responded with love and forgiveness. Therefore, if we are connected to Jesus, the true vine, we will also seek to bear this essential character trait.
Gentleness promotes unity and harmony in our relationships. When we respond with gentleness, we diffuse conflicts and avoid causing unnecessary offense. “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” – Proverbs 15:1. Gentleness allows us to speak the truth in love, even when it is difficult, without causing harm or division. Let us be very careful of the words that we speak as we interact with our children, family, friends, neighbours and even strangers.
“Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.” – Philippians 4:5
As we continue to operate in a culture that values strength and assertiveness, gentleness stands out as a unique and attractive quality. As we display gentleness in our interactions with others, we demonstrate the transforming power of the gospel and point others to Christ.
I pray that you will reflect God’s gentle character as you seek to bear this good fruit.
